Home insurance premiums are 52% higher than they were in 2020, and the average homeowner is now putting about a third of their monthly payment to taxes and insurance.
Premiums and claims for ski resorts and outdoor ice rinks — places that depend on cold weather to operate safely — have both gotten higher. Some insurers will no longer take chances on them.
“We’re never going to get to affordability if we don’t get insurers back into California. And the way we do that is by bringing down the risk,” said Ricardo Lara, the California Insurance Commissioner.
The fires in Los Angeles “could make this the costliest insured loss due to wildfires in history globally,” said Karen Collins with the American Property Casualty Insurance Association.
