The FCC takes on the set top box
But you may have to keep paying around $230 for your cable box, for now.

If you’re like most people with cable or satellite, you rent your box from the cable company and pay a monthly fee for it. Right now that’s about the only option you have, with a few very small exceptions. You might have another box like Apple TV that you stream content through … but for cable, there’s really just the one option.
But that may not be the status quo forever. Today, the FCC proposed cable and satellite subscribers should get to pick any box they want. Marketplace senior tech correspondent Molly Wood joined Kai Ryssdal to explain the debate and the future of the ball-and-chain set top box.
