TikTok parent company ByteDance is asking the court to halt a law that would require the Chinese company to sell TikTok to a U.S. firm or face a ban.

In April, President Biden signed into law a bipartisan bill compelling ByteDance to sell TikTok to a government-approved buyer in 270 days, or face a ban in the U.S. Meanwhile, TikTok is hoping for a win in court.

It’s part of an overall mistrust of foreign influence with deep roots in American history.

Efforts to force parent company ByteDance to either divest or sell off the app would likely meet resistance from China.

The wildly popular app relies on algorithm-based customizing that’s helped glue users to their screens.
