Feb. 5 marks the Lunar New Year and the start of the Year of the Pig. In Chinese communities around the world, the holiday is a chance to take off work and spend time with family. But also, it’s about gifts, especially in the form of cash-filled envelopes called hóng bāo (紅包). Here, some folks who grew up celebrating the Lunar New Year share their memories of giving and receiving “lucky money” both in person and in digital form.
