Thousands see reduced Social Security checks because of unpaid student loans
The Department of Education reclaimed about $171 million from these checks.

Thousands of older Americans have been losing sizable chunks of their Social Security checks to pay back federal student loans. A new study out from the Government Accountability Office found that these required withholdings sometimes drop people’s incomes below the poverty line.
