U.S. automakers’ push into China faces hurdles

Big American trucks used to be banned, and they're still subject to high tariffs, but GM and Ford seem to think the time is right.

General Motors and Ford have announced plans to export trucks to China next year. China is a market not typically associated with big American vehicles like the Chevy Silverado or the Ford F-150. For one, it has strict emissions and size restrictions that effectively ban trucks from many big cities. But the times they are a-changing, and automakers are looking increasingly to export markets as part of an intensified global strategy.
