One of the constant refrains we hear from presidential candidate Donald Trump is that we have to create more jobs in America and part of the problem is the United States’ huge trade deficit. We buy more from the world than what we sell to the world, but it turns out, that very simple concept is maybe not so simple.

Neil Irwin is the senior economic correspondent at the New York Times’s and he writes about our complex trade deficit in today’s edition of The Upshot.
