A veteran’s college experience

Karlene Williams promised herself she would finish school if she survived the war.

At last count, the Post-9/11 GI Bill has helped send more than 1.8  million veterans to college since 2009. But until recently the most elite private colleges haven’t done a very good job of recruiting them. The Posse Foundation is trying to change that, by helping place veterans at selective colleges like Wesleyan and Dartmouth. Karlene Williams, 34, is a single mom who served in the Iraq War as a unit supply specialist in the Army. Now she’s a sophomore at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
