Blackberry is dead; Long live BBM!

Blackberry Messenger was downloaded over 5 million times in eight hours when it was made available for iPhone and Android.

One brand that probably will not be raking it in during the holiday shopping season is Blackberry. Sales of the company’s phones have tumbled, and sale of the company itself is imminent. So here’s a twist. Blackberry Messenger, by most accounts the first quality messaging app on smart phones since back in the day, is back in vogue. After the company made the app available for iPhones and Androids this week, BBM was downloaded over 5 million times in under eight hours. It’s cheaper and more secure when compared to many other messaging platforms. Analyst Ted Schadler says it’s also proof that, in our world of gadgets, sometimes it’s all about the service.
