Glitches that abruptly bring markets to a halt are on the rise

Competing algorithms could be the culprit. And a new study says they're on the rise.

A new report out Wednesday from the University of Miami says electronic glitches, or so-called ‘flash crashes,’ in financial markets are on the rise. Often these extreme events happen within just a few miliseconds. Neil Johnson, professor of Physics at the University of Miami and co-author of the study, joins Marketplace Tech host Ben Johnson to discuss the often volatile combination of modern computing technology and financial markets.
