Oil boom family is cramped but together
A year after her husband moved to North Dakota's oil fields from their home in Missouri, Shannon Atwell picked up her four boys and joined him.
The oil fields of North Dakota are a man’s world, as is true in most any mining rush. At the end of the day workers from out of state crowd into sprawling camps, or rented basements, or they sleep in their cars. Not too many wives with their husbands out there.
Marketplace is airing parts of a series called Black Gold Boom out of Williston, N.D. — portraits of people caught up in the middle of the rush. Today, independent producer Laura Candler visits a woman who did follow her husband.
Black Gold Boom is an initiative of Localore and the Association of Independents in Radio.
