The very first one — Jan. 14th, 1997 — “Prodigy competitor, for short.” Another, on Feb. 26th, 2002: “It merged with Time Warner.” All the way down to Dec. 5th last year: “‘You’ve Got Mail’ company.”

An engineer at Quartz, the Atlantic’s new business site, built an app to let you build a search all the way back to 1996.
