Hackers release Symantec source code
Bean spilling the result of meaningless standoff
Well, I think we all saw this coming. This all started when a hacker stole source code for Symantec’s pcAnywhere product that lets you log onto your desktop remotely. Then there was a negotiation between Symantec and the hacker wherein the company evidently offered $50,000 for the code to be destroyed. But both the hacker and Symantec later said the possibility of such a deal was all hooey: Symantec was working with the cops and the hacker always intended to publish the code, which has now happened. So now, other hackers can get into the product and presumably figure out ways to also hack into the computers of people using pcAnywhere. So if you’re one of those people using that product, now would be the time to totally freak out. Good luck.
