Telecomix, the activist group that likes to be referred to as “internauts” rather than hackers – thank you very much, tipped the U.S. government off to a possible shady business deal between Blue Coat Systems and the Syrian government, an act that could violate the embargo the U.S. has had in place since 2004. Telecomix alleges that data it downloaded from the Syrian government shows Blue Coat, a company that builds web filtering devices, hardware being deployed to monitor the country’s Internet use. Blue Coat replied with the following statement: “Blue Coat does not sell its products into Syria, and prohibits its partners from selling Blue Coat products into Syria or other embargoed countries.” None the less, the State Department is investigating the claims.
