The US government will close 800 of its 2000 computer data centers. New technology, like cloud computing and spreading the data crunching load across computers, allows centers to be more efficient, thus eliminating the need to have so many. According to the New York Times, the Federal Government is the biggest IT customer in the world, spending about $80 billion a year. These cuts should save billions a year and free up real estate that currently houses the data centers. The number of jobs expected to be to be eliminated will be in the tens of thousands.
