As Congress fights over how to balance the budget, the fate of government transparency and whether data will continue to remain available online has been in question, and it’s looking more and more like it will die by the time all this settles down. It’s been kind of a challenge – it’s hard to make all that data make sense and feel useful for people, although the Obama administration has tried with efforts like Your 2010 Federal Tax Receipt. Sites like Data.gov has helped gather tons of data and make it available in a form that people can reprocess into charts and visualizations and so forth, but it’s looking like it might not make it through all the budget cuts unscathed.
