Appliances rebate program a hit

U.S. consumers are quickly snatching up government rebates for energy-efficient appliances.

The rebate program, which we reported in this story last year, sets aside $300 million for 56 states and territories to encourage consumers to make the transition to more energy-efficient appliances with the Energy Star label. The amount of money available and the programs vary across states — $35 million in California, $18 million in Colorado.

Like Cash for Clunkers, the program appears to be going well. Florida appliance rebates were all gone during the first weekend of the program. In Illinois, the $6.5 million in rebates was drained after 11 hours, ending the program nine days before it was scheduled to close. Officials expect a similar scenario to happen in Missouri, where the program launched on Monday. California’s program is expected to launch Thursday.
